The second Chromatic Wednesdays event on improvisation considers the interrelation of visual and performative arts with music in the infinity of possibilities, expressed through improvisation. In Four human faces, each stuck in a video frame, slave to the rhythm Max Michel Thillaye confronts clay statues with sound impulses. The sculpture-like busts react differently. As they are actually human beings they animate the figures with movement and facial expressions. In the audiovisual art project, sound unfolds movement out of stillness, unraveling a wide range of emotional transformations, even as all faces receive the same sound. Far from a deliberate choice, the work shows how human movements and reactions are as unpredictable as improvisations.
Having always harbored an avid interest in audio-visual work, Max Michel Thillaye, a French filmmaker based in Berlin, perceives film as a tool to transmit the human experience into a visual narrative. Thillaye’s work centers around the action of dissecting moments by rupturing indoctrinated routines, striving to show the constructs that make up our existence in society. The works often deal with the act of adaptation, but also explore the process of ripping free from such structures. Therefore, chance and improvisation are crucial elements of his approach, as much as the interaction between the environment and the actors.

The second part of this episode presents the site-specific performance Liquid Machine by Marta Antinucci and Mehmet Güren. It combines the idea of liquidity through a sensory imagination with the interaction between the rhythmic sound produced by Mehmet Güren and the movement through the expansive installation by Marta Antinucci. The improvised interplay transforms the installation space, which is related to the water world. This allows the artists to animate Zygmunt Bauman’s Liquid Modernity, which describes the increasing sense of uncertainty, but also the nomadism that allows people to flow through life, as Antinucci will do through the space.

Marta Antinucci is an Italian multidisciplinary artist, performer, and choreographer currently based in Berlin. She considers movement as a vocabulary that she expands to multi-disciplinary languages starting from the body together with the interventions of voice, plastic, hair, cables, paint, fabrics, tiles, concrete. Formerly based on techniques of contemporary dance, urban, release, modern, ballet, and acting, her practice currently aims to break these forms. She, therefore, explores new dynamisms triggered by realistic references together with visual and sensorial interventions and is empowered by the use of repetition.

For Liquid Machine she collaborates with Mehmet Güren, a sound artist, composer, and producer from Istanbul currently based in Berlin. His work focuses on exploring data-driven textures, creating rhythmic mutations, and balancing seemingly incompatible influences by combining modular synthesis techniques with samples from field recordings.
Chromatic Wednesdays is a bi-weekly series of events aimed at bringing together creative thinkers from a variety of backgrounds. The event will be held at Apartment Project (Hertzbergstraße 13, 12055 Berlin) and will start at 19.00 (doors will open at 18.30) with Max Michel Thillaye’s Four human faces, each stuck in a video frame, slave to the rhythm and will continue with Marta Antinucci and Mehmet Güren’s Liquid Machine at 20.10 after a short break. Die zweite Chromatic Wednesdays Veranstaltung zum Thema Improvisation befasst sich mit der Wechselbeziehung zwischen visueller sowie performativer Kunst und Musik in der Unendlichkeit der Möglichkeiten, die durch Improvisation zum Ausdruck kommt. In Four human faces, each stuck in a video frame, slave to the rhythm beschallt Max Michel Thillaye Statuen aus Ton mit Klangimpulsen. Die skulpturähnlichen Büsten reagieren unterschiedlich. Da es sich in Wirklichkeit um menschliche Wesen handelt, beleben sie die Figuren durch Bewegung und Mimik. In dem audiovisuellen Kunstprojekt entfaltet der Klang aus der Stille heraus Bewegung und zeigt ein breites Spektrum an emotionalen Verwandlungen, auch wenn alle Gesichter denselben Klang empfangen. Die Arbeit macht deutlich, wie wenig menschliche Bewegungen und Reaktionen mit bewussten Entscheidungen zu tun haben und wie unvorhersehbar sie sind, ähnlich wie Improvisationen.

Der in Berlin lebende französische Filmemacher Max Michel Thillaye, der schon immer ein großes Interesse an audiovisuellen Arbeiten hatte, sieht Film als ein Instrument, um menschliche Erfahrung in eine visuelle Erzählung zu übertragen. Thillayes Arbeit konzentriert sich auf das Sezieren von Momenten, indem er indoktrinierte Routinen aufbricht und versucht, die Konstruktionen aufzuzeigen, die unsere Existenz in der Gesellschaft ausmachen. Seine Arbeiten befassen sich oft mit dem Akt der Anpassung, erforschen aber auch den Prozess des Herausreißens aus solchen Strukturen. Deshalb sind Zufall und Improvisation entscheidende Elemente seiner Herangehensweise, ebenso wie die Interaktion zwischen der Umgebung und den Darstellenden.

Der zweite Teil der Veranstaltung präsentiert die ortsspezifische Performance Liquid Machine von Marta Antinucci und Mehmet Güren. Sie verbindet die Idee der Liquidität mit der Interaktion zwischen dem rhythmischen Klang von Mehmet Güren und der Bewegung durch die raumgreifende Installation durch Marta Antinucci durch sinnliche Imagination. Das improvisierte Zusammenspiel verwandelt den Installationsraum, der sich auf die Wasserwelt bezieht. Dies ermöglicht es den Künstler_innen, Zygmunt Baumans Konzept Liquid Modernity zu beleben, welches das zunehmende Gefühl der Unsicherheit, aber auch das Nomadentum beschreibt, das den Menschen erlaubt, durch das Leben zu fließen. In Anlehnung an den Begriff Baumans wird auch Antinucci durch den Raum fließen.

Marta Antinucci ist eine italienische multidisziplinäre Künstlerin, Performerin und Choreografin, die derzeit in Berlin lebt. Sie betrachtet Bewegung als ein Vokabular, das sie zu einer multidisziplinären Sprache ausweitet, die vom Körper ausgeht und mit Stimme, Plastik, Haaren, Kabeln, Farbe, Stoffen, Fliesen und Beton interveniert. Während ihre Praxis früher auf Techniken des zeitgenössischen Tanzes, Urban Dance, Release, Modern Dance, Balletts und Schauspiels basierte, zielt ihre Praxis gegenwärtig darauf ab, diese Formen zu brechen. Sie erforscht deshalb neue Dynamiken, die durch realistische Bezüge in Verbindung mit visuellen und sensorischen Interventionen ausgelöst und durch den Einsatz von Wiederholungen verstärkt werden. Für Liquid Machine arbeitet sie mit Mehmet Güren zusammen, einem Klangkünstler, Komponisten und Produzenten aus Istanbul, der zurzeit in Berlin lebt. Seine Arbeit konzentriert sich auf die Erforschung datengesteuerter Texturen, die Schaffung rhythmischer Mutationen und das Ausbalancieren scheinbar unvereinbarer Einflüsse durch die Kombination modularer Synthesetechniken mit Samples aus Feldaufnahmen.

Chromatic Wednesdays ist eine zweiwöchentliche Veranstaltungsreihe, die kreative Denker_innen aus den unterschiedlichsten Disziplinen zusammenbringt. Die Veranstaltung findet im Apartment Project (Hertzbergstraße 13, 12055 Berlin) statt und beginnt um 19.00 Uhr (Einlass ab 18.30 Uhr) mit Max Michel Thillayes Four human faces, each stuck in a video frame, slave to the rhythm und wird nach einer kurzen Pause mit Marta Antinucci und Mehmet Gürens Liquid Machine um 20.10 Uhr fortgesetzt.
