Precarity leaves people in a state of insecurity and uncertainty that is constantly increasing in neoliberal societies. This session of «Chromatic Wednesdays» approaches the subject through experimental artistic forms. First, artists Fatma Belkıs and Ali Taptık will reflect on the theme not as humans, but as a zombie and a ghost, respectively. No longer alive, so to speak, they will look at their practices and afterlives from a posthumous vantage point, referring to Fatma’s artist book «Those who Stayed» (2011). Will their alleged undead state change their view on the topic of precarity? In his music performance «Inaudible Disquietudes» sarc will then make uncanny states audible through live synthesized compositions. Episodes of modular order and chaos, reminiscent of otherworldly memories and visions, will echo how we experience our existence in a world where relationships with the beyond often remain mute.

Fatma Belkıs (b. 1985 in Antalya) is an artist living in Istanbul. She works with text, video, and printed matter, individually and in collectives. Her practice draws on human experiences that undergo a kind of transformation, especially when they take place in the interaction between different people. In her personal life, however, she prefers to live with cats. She studied visual arts and communication design in Istanbul and her works have been shown at Sharjah Biennial, Istanbul Modern, DEPO, Istanbul, nGbK, Berlin, and Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm, among others. Her films have been screened at international film festivals in Turkey and Europe.

Ali Taptık (b. 1983 in Istanbul) is an artist, architect and publisher. After leaving his position as a PhD student at the Istanbul Technical University due to ideological reasons he continues his research on the relationship between textile production and Istanbul’s urban transformation as an independent researcher. The representation of urban landscape and architecture, the relationship between the individual and the city, psychogeography and the interaction of literature and visuality are some of the topics he explores. Taptık has authored several artist books, such as «Kaza ve Kader» (2009), «Depicting Istanbul» (2010), «There are no failed experiments» (2012) and «Nothing Surprising» (2015). His works have been exhibited in various institutions including SALT, Istanbul, MAXXI, Rome, Ashkal Alwan, Beirut, the Venice Biennial for Architecture and the Istanbul Biennial. Taptık is one of the founders of the «Bandrolsüz» collective for the distribution of independent artists’ books and is the director of «Onagöre», a design and publishing agency.

sarc (Emre Sarıgöl) is a musician from Istanbul currently based in Zurich. Coming from an improvised music practice, playing bass and Middle Eastern instruments from a young age, he later turned to synthesizers and modular electronics, especially since founding the duo Fezayafirar together with f:rar (Melih Sarıgöl) in 2012. His performances are characteristic of the combination of microtonal music and live synthesis, exploring rhythmic, harmonic and atonal patterns that merge in louder and quieter parts. He is active in the improvisation and electronic music scene mainly in Switzerland, Germany and Turkey and produced releases on labels such as Crystal Mine, Burgos, Kinetic Records, Thessaloniki, Attenuation Circuit, Augsburg and Endtitles, Zurich. Together with Gergemann (Gökalp Ergeçen) he recently launched Daralan Records, an Istanbul-based electronic music label.

«Chromatic Wednesdays» is a bi-weekly event series aimed at bringing together creative thinkers from diverse backgrounds. The event will take place at Apartment Project (Hertzbergstraße 13, 12055 Berlin) and will start at 19.00 (doors will open at 18.30) with the conversation between Fatma Belkıs and Ali Taptık. Prekarität versetzt Menschen in einen Zustand der Unsicherheit und Ungewissheit, der in neoliberalen Gesellschaften ständig zunimmt. Diese Session von «Chromatic Wednesdays» nähert sich dem Thema durch experimentelle künstlerische Formen. Zunächst werden die Künstler_innen Fatma Belkıs und Ali Taptık anstatt als Menschen, als Zombie bzw. Geist darüber nachdenken. Sie sind sozusagen nicht mehr am Leben und werden ihre Praktiken und ihr Leben nach dem Tod aus einem posthumen Blickwinkel betrachten, wobei sie sich auf Fatmas Künstlerbuch «Those who Stayed» (2011) beziehen. Wird ihr vermeintlich untoter Zustand ihren Blick auf das Thema Prekarität verändern? In seiner Live Performance «Inaudible Disquietudes» wird sarc dann unheimliche Zustände durch Synthesizer Kompositionen hörbar machen. Episoden von modularer Ordnung und Chaos, die auf jenseitige Erinnerungen und Visionen verweisen, werden widerhallen, wie wir unsere Existenz in einer Welt erleben, in der die Beziehungen zum Jenseits oft ungehört bleiben.

Fatma Belkıs (geb. 1985 in Antalya) ist eine in Istanbul lebende Künstlerin. Sie arbeitet mit Text, Video und Druckerzeugnissen, individuell und in Kollektiven. Ihre Praxis stützt sich auf menschliche Erfahrungen, die eine Art Transformation durchlaufen, insbesondere wenn sie in der Interaktion zwischen verschiedenen Menschen stattfinden. In ihrem Privatleben zieht sie es jedoch vor, mit Katzen zu leben. Sie studierte Bildende Kunst und Kommunikationsdesign in Istanbul. Ihre Arbeiten wurden unter anderem auf der Sharjah Biennale, im Istanbul Modern, DEPO, Istanbul, in der nGbK, Berlin, und in der Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm gezeigt. Ali Taptık (geb. 1983 in Istanbul) ist Künstler, Architekt und Publizist. Nachdem er seine Stelle als Doktorand an der Technischen Universität Istanbul aus ideologischen Gründen aufgegeben hat, setzt er seine Forschungen über die Beziehung zwischen der Textilproduktion und der urbanen Transformation Istanbuls als unabhängiger Forscher fort. Zusammen mit Gergemann (Gökalp Ergeçen) hat er kürzlich Daralan Records, ein in Istanbul ansässiges Label für elektronische Musik, gegründet.

«Chromatic Wednesdays» ist eine zweiwöchentliche Veranstaltungsreihe, die kreative Denker_innen mit unterschiedlichem Hintergrund zusammenbringt. Die Veranstaltung findet im Apartment Project (Hertzbergstraße 13, 12055 Berlin, Einlass ab 18.30 Uhr) statt und beginnt um 19 Uhr mit dem Gespräch zwischen Fatma Belkıs and Ali Taptık.
