«Chromatic Wednesdays» continues to explore the theme «Exile» with filmmaker Liwaa Yazji and musician Rasha Nahas. Liwaa Yazji’s award-winning film «Haunted» tells of the loss of home and security by tracing the reasons why people stay in or leave their homes during the war in Syria, as well as the material and metaphorical meaning of home. By conveying the physical, emotional, and psychological toll of displacement, it records the uncertainty resulting from flight and displacement from war, creating a non-space between yesterday and tomorrow. Rasha Nahas familiarizes her listeners with her Palestinian background through sonic landscapes informed in no small part by the underground scene of her hometown of Haifa. Her songs often describe moments of transition, departure and arrival. Her 2021 album «Desert» documents her journey from Haifa, where she wrote most of the songs, over Turkey, where she penned the last track while sitting under a tree by a river, to Germany, where she recorded the album at her new home base.

Liwaa Yazji is a Syrian filmmaker, playwright, TV screenwriter, dramaturge and poet. After she graduated in both, English Literature and Theatre Studies, she has lived and worked in Beirut and in Berlin. Liwaa´s play «Q&Q» premiered at the B!RTH festival at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester in 2016 and her play «Goats» at The Royal Court in London 2017. In 2015, Liwaa was a poet-in-residence at the New York´s Poets House. She is currently the co-writer of «HEIM», a television series to be produced in Germany, and a board member of Ettijahat-Independent Culture. Her Libretto for the opera «Songs for Days to Come» will be premiered in June 2022 at the Theater Osnabrück.

Palestinian singer, composer and instrumentalist Rasha Nahas has a distinctive approach to songwriting, storytelling and performance, her sound moving seamlessly between the resonances of early rock ‘n’ roll and the anarchic heyday of ‘80s experimental electronica. Rasha’s critically acclaimed debut album «Desert» was featured by BBC Radio 4’s Loose Ends and the Spotify-produced podcast, Spotify:Mic Check. Her upcoming LP «Amrat» is due for release in the summer of 2022 with tours scheduled across Europe and West Asia. Rasha’s first foray into Arabic language works explores themes of home, belonging, spirituality, freedom and her relationship with her mother-tongue. Rasha is among the first to receive the Bertha Foundation’s Artivism Award in 2022.

«Chromatic Wednesdays» is a bi-weekly event series aimed at bringing together creative thinkers from diverse backgrounds. The event will take place at Apartment Project (Hertzbergstraße 13, 12055 Berlin) and will start at 18.30 (doors will open at 18.00) with Liwaa Yazji’s film «Haunted» and a conversation with her, which will continue after a short break with a concert by Washa Nahas at 21:00. «Chromatic Wednesdays» setzt die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema «Exile» mit der Filmemacherin Liwaa Yazji und der Musikerin Rasha Nahas fort. Liwaa Yazjis preisgekrönter Film «Haunted» erzählt vom Verlust von Heimat und Sicherheit, indem er den Gründen nachspürt, warum Menschen während des Krieges in Syrien in ihrem Zuhause bleiben oder es verlassen, sowie von der materiellen und metaphorischen Bedeutung von Heimat. Indem Liwaa die physischen, emotionalen und psychologischen Folgen von Vertreibung schildert, zeichnet sie die Ungewissheit auf, die aus Flucht und Vertreibung vor dem Krieg resultiert, und schafft einen Nicht-Raum zwischen gestern und morgen. Rasha Nahas macht ihre Zuhörer_innen durch Klanglandschaften mit ihrem palästinensischen Hintergrund vertraut, die zu einem nicht geringen Teil von der Untergrundszene ihrer Heimatstadt Haifa geprägt sind. Ihre Lieder beschreiben oft Momente des Übergangs, des Aufbruchs und der Ankunft. Ihr 2021 erschienenes Album «Desert» dokumentiert ihre Reise von Haifa, wo sie die meisten Songs des Albums geschrieben hat, über die Türkei, wo sie den letzten Track unter einem Baum an einem Fluss sitzend komponiert hat, bis nach Deutschland, wo sie das Album in ihrem neuen Lebensmittelpunkt aufgenommen hat.

Liwaa Yazji ist eine syrische Filmemacherin, Theaterautorin, TV-Drehbuchautorin, Dramaturgin und Dichterin. Nach ihrem Abschluss in Anglistik und Theaterwissenschaft hat sie in Beirut und Berlin gelebt und gearbeitet. Liwaas Stück «Q&Q» wurde 2016 beim the B!RTH Festival am Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester uraufgeführt und ihr Stück «Goats» 2017 am Royal Court in London. Im Jahr 2015 war Liwaa Poet-in-Residence im New Yorker Poets House. «Chromatic Wednesdays» ist eine zweiwöchentliche Veranstaltungsreihe, die kreative Denker_innen mit unterschiedlichem Hintergrund zusammenbringt. Die Veranstaltung findet im Apartment Project (Hertzbergstraße 13, 12055 Berlin, Einlass ab 18.00 Uhr) statt und beginnt um 18.30 Uhr mit dem Film «Haunted» von Liwaa Yazji und einem Gespräch mit ihr, das nach einer kurzen Pause mit einem Konzert von Washa Nahas um 21.00 Uhr fortgesetzt wird.
