19.30 Sound performances by Lisa Simpson, Liz Kosack and Viola Yip

In this edition of «Chromatic Wednesdays», light fluctuates through the music, sound and noise performances by Lisa Simpson, Liz Kosack, and Viola Yip. In her improvisation «Agente Costura», Lisa uses light sensors and a sewing machine transformed into a self-playing, oscillating, blinking, touch- and light-sensitive instrument to create soundscapes. Blurring the confines of the human form, and mindful of the dark side of unbridled growth, Liz’s performance with synthesizers is an attempt to fuse the biological and synthetic to create a hybrid organism. In her performance «Bubble», Yiola employs buttons, knobs, relays, and light bulbs exploring the resulting acoustics and the electromagnetic relationship between relays.

Lisa Simpson lives and works in Berlin, and is involved in a number of projects in collaboration with artists and audiences. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from Universidade Tuiuti do Paraná, a Master’s degree in Applied Arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, and is a graduate of the Institute for Art in Context at Berlin University of the Arts. Lisa has been playing the Singer, a sewing machine, since 2003, sewing to musical beats, rhythm and sound. In doing so, she creates a dreamlike soundscape that is amplified by self-built portable oscillators and feedback machines. She has performed internationally at numerous venues including the Goethe Institute Jakarta, Schneidertempel Istanbul, Akademie der Künste, HKW, The Vancouver Art Gallery, Museum der Fünf Kontinente Munich, Bimhuis Amsterdam, Curitiba Fashion Week.

Liz Kosack is a US-born, Berlin-based synthesizer player and mask maker. With a unique voice on keyboards, she has been active internationally with a host of projects and musicians from the current contemporary improv scene and was awarded the SWR Jazzpreis in 2019. Drawn into synthesis by the infinite sound world and modes of control which promise expression and play, Liz has moved ever closer to bond with her instruments. As a mask maker, her work prods a reductive and malleable identity.

VIOLA YIP is an experimental composer, performer, improviser, sound artist and instrument maker. Her instruments and sound performances have been presented at music festivals and venues such as Issue Project Room (NYC), The New School (NYC), Look and Listen Festival (NYC), DiMenna Center (NYC), CCRMA at Stanford University, CNMAT at UC Berkeley, Center for New Music (SF), Constellation (Chicago), Cycling ‘74 Expo, Hong Kong Arts Center (HK), Sonic Arts Research Center at Queen’s University Belfast, QO-2 Brussels, Zentrum für Kunst und Medien (ZKM) Karlsruhe, Pinakothek der Moderne Munich, and Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. She received an honorary mention from the Giga-Hertz-Preis 2021 at ZKM, the Künstlerhaus Villa Waldberta fellowship in Munich and a residency at the Studios für Elektroakustische Musik and Akademie der Künste Berlin.
