With this session, «Chromatic Wednesdays» enquires into how people respond to the presence of precarity in individuals and in society. Stephanie Hanna will approach this question through her «bodymind wanderings», a video performance lecture accompanied by Bernhard Wöstheinrich’s ambient soundscapes. “Together, we will navigate through the complexity of the current moment. The fields we wander will emerge through snippets of my video observations of life**, while digesting some of the theories that reflect human experiences. We will consciously enter the field of precarity and become more aware about our agency to influence the existing power dynamics with resistance and imagination.”

Azra Deniz Okyay’s film «Ghosts» will illuminate the experience of precarity in a microcosm by following four characters in Istanbul on a day on the brink of a nationwide blackout: a mother whose son is in prison, a young woman devoted to dancing, an activist and artist, and a wily middleman, all in a neighborhood that is in the middle of the process of gentrification towards «New Turkey». Their paths cross as the day progresses to a drug-dealing incident and a compelling story of today’s generations unfolds.

Stephanie Hanna is an artist, art mediator, stage and costume designer, performer and author. Since the 1990s she has been working with bodily-spatial perception in the fields of art and performance, often outside of art contexts, as well as in mediation in workshops and participatory projects. She studied stage and costume design (Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin and Utrecht School of the Arts, 2001) and completed the master’s degree «Art in Context» at the Berlin University of the Arts (2006). She is currently training in somatic movement therapy and pedagogy to deepen and professionalize her long experience in this field.

Bernhard Wöstheinrich (b. 1968, Herzebrock) is a sound artist, improviser and painter living in Berlin. He elicits meaning from abstraction in electronic music and painting. After his first experiments with sounds and tunes starting from 1987, he studied visual communication in Bielefeld and created an eclectic body of work from this synthesis of sound, music, graphics and performance.

Azra Deniz Okyay (b. 1983, Istanbul) started practicing photography at the age of 12 and became an assistant of the photographer Dora Gunel at 14. She studied Cinema at the Sorbonne-Nouvelle, where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and studied sociology for two years at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales. Upon her return to Turkey in 2010, she became the first female director at Depo, an Istanbul based advertising production company. She made several short films and music videos. Her first feature film «Ghosts» won the Settimana de la Crittica 2020 at Venice International Film festival 2020.

«Chromatic Wednesdays» is a bi-weekly event series aimed at bringing together creative thinkers from diverse backgrounds. The event will take place at Apartment Project (Hertzbergstraße 13, 12055 Berlin) and will start at 19.00 (doors will open at 18.30) with film screening of «Ghosts» by Azra Deniz Okyay, followed by a Q&A session with Şirin Fulya Erensoy. Mit dieser Session erkundet «Chromatic Wednesdays» wie Menschen auf die Präsenz von Prekarität individuell und in der Gesellschaft reagieren. Stephanie Hanna wird sich der Frage durch ihre «bodymind wanderings» nähern, einer Video-Performance-Lecture, die von Bernhard Wöstheinrichs atmosphärischen Soundscapes begleitet wird. “Gemeinsam navigieren wir durch die Komplexität des gegenwärtigen Augenblicks. Die Felder, die wir durchwandern, ergeben sich aus Schnipseln meiner Videobeobachtungen vom Leben** und aus Theoriefragmenten, die die menschliche Existenz reflektieren. Wir betreten das Feld der Prekarität und werden uns bewusster über widerständige Handlungsmöglichkeiten und Vorstellungskräfte, mit denen wir die Machtverhältnisse beeinflussen und vielleicht auch transformieren können.”

Azra Deniz Okyays Film «Ghosts» beleuchtet die Erfahrung von Prekarität in einem Mikrokosmos, indem er vier Personen in Istanbul an einem Tag am Rande eines landesweiten Stromausfalls begleitet: eine Mutter, deren Sohn im Gefängnis sitzt, eine junge Frau, die sich dem Tanzen verschrieben hat, eine Aktivistin und Künstlerin sowie ein gerissener Mittelsmann, alle in einem Viertel, das sich mitten im Prozess der Gentrifizierung in Richtung «Neue Türkei» befindet. Ihre Wege kreuzen sich im Laufe des Tages bis zu einem Zwischenfall bei einem Drogendeal und es entfaltet sich eine mitreißende Geschichte der heutigen Generationen.

Stephanie Hanna ist Künstlerin, Kunstvermittlerin, Bühnen- und Kostümbildnerin, Performerin und Autorin. Seit den 1990er Jahren arbeitet sie mit körperlich-räumlicher Wahrnehmung in den Bereichen Kunst und Performance, oft außerhalb von Kunstkontexten, sowie in der Vermittlung in Workshops und partizipativen Projekten. Sie studierte Bühnen- und Kostümbild (Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin und Hochschule der Künste Utrecht, 2001) und schloss den Masterstudiengang «Kunst im Kontext» an der Universität der Künste Berlin ab (2006). Derzeit macht sie eine Ausbildung in somatischer Bewegungstherapie und Pädagogik, um ihre langjährige Erfahrung in diesem Bereich zu vertiefen und zu professionalisieren.

Bernhard Wöstheinrich (geb. 1968, Herzebrock) ist ein in Berlin lebender Klangkünstler, Improvisator und Maler, der der Abstraktion in elektronischer Musik und Malerei Bedeutung entlockt. Nach ersten Experimenten mit Klängen und Melodien ab 1987 studierte er Visuelle Kommunikation in Bielefeld und schuf aus dieser Synthese von Klang, Musik, Grafik und Performance ein vielseitiges Werk.

«Chromatic Wednesdays» ist eine zweiwöchentliche Veranstaltungsreihe, die kreative Denker_innen mit unterschiedlichem Hintergrund zusammenbringt. Die Veranstaltung findet im Apartment Project (Hertzbergstraße 13, 12055 Berlin) statt und beginnt um 19.00 Uhr (Einlass ab 18.30 Uhr) mit einer Filmvorführung von “Ghosts” von Azra Deniz Okyay, gefolgt von einer Fragerunde mit Şirin Fulya Erensoy. Nach einer kurzen Pause wird die Veranstaltung um 21.00 Uhr mit der Performance von Stephanie Hanna und Bernhard Wöstheinrich fortgesetzt..
