Chromatic Wednesdays #7

This week on Chromatic Wednesdays, we are following the valleys of the mountainous region of the South Caucasus and Eastern Anatolia only to discover the everlasting bond and attachment between its people and the cultural heritage that is overflowing across its shared lines. For the first episode of our Borders theme, we are thrilled to welcome the musical embodiment of the region’s intertwined and rich composition — A.G.A. Trio, namely Deniz Mahir Kartal, Mikail Yakut, Arsen Petrosyan from Turkey, Armenia and Georgia respectively. Masterfully playing the three kindred instruments -kaval, duduk, and accordion- A.G.A. Trio creates a harmony that uncovers the melodic amplitude and the vast array of timbres echoing between the passages that bridge the three neighbors. The virtuosos assemble folk tales, love songs of bards, laments for the fallen, respect for nature, and ultimately, the meeting of peoples and their co-existence.

For the last episode of Chromatic Wednesday’s January programme, we are delighted to host artist and poet Bitsy Knox at Apartment Project with a spatio-temporal reading performance. Bitsy and her alternating voice will explore recent prose, looping, distorting and echoing through our project space for an introspective investigation. Inspired by former protagonists who now can be referred to as mere passers-by, the performance is the artist’s search of corporealising the text by using her constitution as a vessel — the irregular reverberations will guide the script to come through her body, flowing and colliding within the rigid space. Read time after time, each sonic manifestation of the text will take on a different character, exploring the way in which meaning leaks from each new voice. Self-actualising for a certain duration, the undulant piece will recede into the distance, chasing the fluttering and buzzing sounds nearby.

Black on Plague is the special pandemic edition of the audiovisual performance series Black on Black. The surprising, archaic, tameless lines of Ceren Oykut, which will this time dive into microcosmos, will be accompanied by FezayaFirar’s live synthesized sound world consisting of drone, noise, glitch, and broken melody elements. The current pandemic has quite unfortunately impacted “Black on Black”, which will appear in this performance with one of its members missing and therefore call themselves “Black on Plague”
